The Importance of ORGANIC FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
Should you buy organic or conventionally grown fruits and vegetables?
The answer is an overwhelming yes for organic. While the organic
fruits and vegetables are as much as twice the cost of conventionally
grown produce, they are far healthier for you.
Organic fruits and vegetables are grown naturally with
no chemicals or pesticides (which are linked to many diseases
including cancer). A recent study by the Environmental Working
Group measured the amount of pesticides in common produce. Below
are the twelve worst offenders (in other words, opt for the organic
variety when available):
- Peaches
- Strawberries
- Apples
- Spinach
- Nectarines
- Celery
- Pears
- Cherries
- Potatoes
- Sweet bell peppers
- Raspberries
- Imported grapes
The study showed that by purchasing the organic fruits and vegetables
instead of their conventionally grown counterparts above, we can
lower our pesticide exposure by ninety percent!

To buy organic produce, it would be best to join a Community
Supported Agriculture project in which you will get the produce
from local farmers. Through the program, you will save money over
the local supermarket / health food store. Once a week you will
receive a box of fresh produce. Currently there are more than
1,000 CSA's across the country. To find one near you, goto: Community
Supported Agriculture (Organic Produce)
There are also farmer's markets in most areas:
