A Hiking
Guide to Easter Island
Ask me which Pacific island has the most to offer hikers and I'll
probably answer Easter Island. Here on an island 11 km wide and 23 km
long you'll find nearly a thousand ancient Polynesian statues strewn
along a powerfully beautiful coastline or littering the slopes of an
extinct volcano. Getting there is easy as Easter Island can be included
in the Oneworld Explorer airpass introduced on http://www.southpacific.org/air.html
, and a fine selection of inexpensive places to stay and eat await you.

Molokai:
The Best Hawaiian Island You've Never Visited
About one million years ago, two large volcanoes, Kamakou in the
east and Maunaloa in the west, pushed through the ocean's surface and
formed the island of Molokai, Hawaii. It first became inhabited around
650 A.D. by daring settlers traveling in double hulled canoes from Tahiti
and other areas in the South Pacific. Of the roughly 7,000 residents
about 40% are of Hawaiian descent, hence the moniker "The Most
Hawaiian Island".
Maui, Hawaii Is
Like Your First Kiss, You'll Never Forget It
Just saying the word "Hawaii" conjures
up images of brown bodies, warm sunshine, and a romantic walk on the
beach in the moonlight. All of this is available and there is much more
than meets the eye. The only thing that could hold you back from seeing
and doing all that there is to do, is your sense of adventure.

Return to Ouvea,
New Caledonia
"Ouvea is everything you'd expect in a South Pacific
island. Twenty kilometers of unbroken white sands border the lagoon
on the west side of the island and extend far out from shore to give
the water a turquoise hue. The wide western lagoon, protected by a string
of coral islands and a barrier reef, is the only of its kind in the
Loyalties. On the ocean side are rocky cliffs, pounded by surf, but
fine beaches may be found even here. At one point on this narrow atoll
only 450 meters separates the two coasts. Traditional circular houses
with pointed thatched roofs are still common in the villages."
Samoa, Heart of
Polynesia
The islands of Samoa are emerging as an exciting new
South Pacific travel destination between Hawaii and New Zealand. This
"Heart of Polynesia" is politically split into two distinct
entities 80 miles apart. The country Samoa is a former German colony,
captured by New Zealand in 1914 and granted independence in 1962. In 1997
the name was changed from Western Samoa to Samoa.
